$150 washing machine rebate

$150 washing machine rebate from 1 March

Media Release - 01 Mar 2006

Buying a new water efficient washing machine will become easier from today with the introduction of a $150 rebate from Sydney Water.

Sydney Water Managing Director, David Evans said the rebate would further build on water savings already achieved by its customers.

“Household water use accounts for around 70 per cent of Sydney’s water consumption, with around three quarters of this being used inside the home,” Mr Evans said.

“Many Sydney Water customers have participated in a range of water saving programs since the demand management strategy was implemented in 1999, saving over 90 billion litres of water.

“These include the WaterFix Program, DIY Water Saving Kits, the Rainwater Tank Rebate and the Every Drop Counts Business Program.

“The washing machine rebate is part of the NSW Government’s plan to help the community save water and secure our water supplies.

“Once fully implemented, the washing machine rebate is expected to save one million litres of water each day.”

Mr Evans said the $150 rebate would be available to Sydney Water residential customers who purchase a four star or 5A rated water efficient washing machine from 1 March 2006 until 28 February 2007.

“Only around four per cent of current washing machine sales are four star or 5A rated,” Mr Evans said.

“This is expected to increase to over 20 per cent with the implementation of the rebate.

“Customers who purchase a water efficient washing machine can save more than 21,000 litres of water each year.

“Water efficient washing machines also provide annual savings of 125 kilowatt hours of electricity and around $45 in utility bills.”

To claim the rebate, customers must complete an application form, attach the original receipt (photocopies not accepted) and send it to Sydney Water’s address located on the rebate brochure available at all retail outlets.

Sydney Water will post the receipt and a cheque for $150 back to the customer within 30 days.

Qualifying washing machines will be marked with a sticker and Sydney Water has informed all white goods retailers about the rebate.

A list of eligible washing machines and a copy of the application form will be available on Sydney Water’s website
